Two albums of sublime material from one of the most underrated and understated soul singers of all time, Mr.William Bell. His 1969 album, Bound To Happen kicks off with the magnificent, deep soul classic, "I Forgot To Be Your Lover". Do not be put off by the absurd Billy Idol cover version, for in William Bell's hands this staggeringly beautiful song, written with Booker T. Jones, would melt the coldest of cold hearts, regardless of hair colouring. In 1969, though they had split with Atlantic, the Stax operation was much as it had always been, with the same team of side men and, in this case, Booker T. Jones handling the production alongside engineer Ron Capone at the Stax studio. However the winds of change were blowing by 1971 and Wow had a mixed origin with recording in Muscle Shoals, Ardent and even in Hollywood at MGM. Al Bell handled much of the production, though Stax stalwarts, the Memphis Horns, the Bar-Kays and the Nightingales, on backgrounds, were still present. They turned out a great album, none the less, with the unique talent of William Bell leading the way, as Stax moved into the 70s and their most successful period.
