 | | | The one and only Little Johnny Taylor (not to be confused with him on Stax). No less than 26 of his Galaxy single sides are gathered here, recorded between 1963 and 1968. This Johnny Taylor was without doubt one of the great blues preachers of all time, cast in the mould of Bobby Bland, Little Milton and Sam Cooke, and weaving an imaginative mixture of blues and gospel. "Part Time Love" was his biggest hit and stands as one of the great records of the blues/gospel, or indeed any, genre. It made it to number 19 in the pop charts and being a black, black record went all the way to the top of the R&B charts. Many self-penned numbers here from Johnny plus some neat covers on the likes of Bland's "I Smell Trouble", and the perennial "For Your Precious Love" (nice reading). For me his version of "Big Blue Diamonds" is the real knee trembler.
