The long awaited Best Of album from the gurus of funk, Funkadelic and all 16 tracks should be familiar to the funk connoisseur. There's a live version of the group's most renowned number, Maggot Brain on CD and for vinyl junkies, Westbound has served up a treat: the 15-track LP comes with a limited addition 12" containing 3 versions of Maggot Brain, including a previously unissued full band remix. The package is completed with an authentic hand-drawn cover design. This is a collectors' item for DJs and funk fans alike. Finest is the group's eleventh release on our Westbound label, which covers their formative years under that name. But the group had been playing together long before they established themselves as a funk outfit. They mutated from a clean-cut doowop group to the original wild and wacky funksters. Having been together for over ten years under the name of Parliament (taken from the name of a cigarette brand), before changing their name, the mainstays of the personnel had met each other at George Clinton's barber shop in the early days. Their combination of funk and psychedelia confused audiences for a while. With hindsight, however, and the increasing use of sampling in modern music, Funkadelic are now recognised as a revolutionary force in music. Their history is a topsy-turvy one, including ever-changing personnel, wardrobe dilemmas and a never-ending well of creativity. They provided music for a rebellious generation-.-hits which have outlasted the era of funk.
