Esther Marrow is already known to BGP buyers from our release of her 1972 Fantasy album “Sister Woman”. Known today as Queen Esther Marrow, a star of the gospel circuit, she first made her name 50 years ago performing with Duke Ellington at his Concert of Sacred Music in San Francisco. From there she sang with a series of top acts, before being signed to Flying Dutchman by Bob Thiele, who viewed her as someone who could succeed in a market dominated by Aretha Franklin. Her album features strong ballads and uptempo soul numbers. ‘Walk Tall’, ‘Chains Of Love’ and ‘Money Honey’ have all been championed by club DJs, pushing up the price of the album. The downtempo material is equally special, ‘Mama’ being a particular favourite of mine. The album didn’t make much impact on release and has never been released on CD before.
