Timbila, CD (£11.50)
Subtitled 'New Chope music from Mozambique', this compilation is the first release from GlobeStyle's recent trip to Mozambique. Durao plays the mbila (plural Timbila) which is the xylophone of the Chope people. The music is normally played in large orchestras with sophisticated suites of compositions and song arrangements. The reason for the word 'New' in the subtitle is that GlobeStyle recorded Durao in a 16 track studio in Maputo, where he overlaid several Timbila and was accompanied on bass, drumkit and percussion, with added chorus & backing vocals. Durao himself handled the lead vocals. This has produced a modern/ roots sound which is a first for this kind of music and hopefully will encourage further experimentation in this field. The album was mixed in the more sophisticated surroundings of a London studio to create a modern sound from this old tradition. Unique!
