Don Julian & The Larks

Don Julian’s musical journey began when he was taught piano by 1940s chartmaker Joe “Honeydripper” Liggins. Adding guitar, vocals and writing to his talents, he first recorded for the RPM label before moving under the Dootone banner for regional doo wop hits with the Meadowlarks in the mid-50s. Subsequent moves to Original Sound and Dynamite kept singles coming, including ‘Slauson Shuffle’, one of his signature songs. In 1964 he noticed youngsters doing a new dance and immediately saw the potential: ‘The Jerk’, recorded for Los Angeles’ Money label by his group the Larks, made the Top 10. The trio cut an album with many derivatively titled songs, helping to spawn dozens of Jerk-related singles from other artists.
