The biggest name in blues, BB King's international achievements, from the late 60s on, helped pave the way for similar crossover successes for artists like John Lee Hooker, Albert King, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray. BB's success, of course, wasn't an overnight affair. It was a mixture of business acumen, hard work (he still tours relentlessly), receptiveness to new ideas, dignity against all odds and, last but not least, the fact he is a genius! "My Sweet Little Angel" gathers together diamond-bright RPM and Kent sides from the late 50s including the original hit versions of "Sweet Little Angel", "Crying Won't Help You" and a perennial B B favourite "Ten Long Years". Bursting with ideas, these records capture all the changes happening in late 50s blues- the searing vocals, intense guitar lines, horn-laden band sounds with wailing saxophone and trumpet incursions, the improvisatory ideas borrowed from jazz. BB distilled this sound perfectly and by the 60s was a major black star in the USA though virtually unknown in the white America of the time. These early records became cult classics in England, fuelling the 60s blues boom and influencing guitarists like Peter Green, Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck. BB toured the UK and Europe on the back of this acclaim, began to move in rock circles and finally hit with the aforementioned Grammy Award winning "Thrill Is Gone". "My Sweet Little Angel" offers BB in his prime-tearing it up with wonderful guitar work, the band of Maxwell Davis and a voice so achingly blue it hurts. The Blues is King!
