PATRICK SKY’s eponymous 1965 album came out around the time Dylan was going electric and the Byrds taking Mr Tambourine Man into the Pop charts. It harked back to an earlier American folk scene in its acoustic simplicity: Patrick accompanies himself on guitar and harmonica with only the support of Ralph Rinzler’s mandolin on Come With Me Love and Wreck Of The Old ‘97. The album opens with Sky’s major song work Many A Mile, a ‘weary road’ travelled set of verses that stands, alongside such songs as Eric Andersen’s Thirsty Boots, as one of the minor cult classics of 60s folk. Of Cherokee-Creek extraction, Sky was influenced by the songs of Native American activist Peter LaFarge (he covers his classic The Ballad Of Ira Hayes) and championed by Buffy Sainte-Marie (who covered Many A Mile on her second album of the same title). Subsequently, Sky would make a second album for Vanguard (“A Harvest Of Gentle Clang”) and a handful more over the next twenty years for such labels as Verve, Adelphi, Leviathan and Shanachie. Today he is a traditional instrument maker and occasional performer.
