It was with dismay that we at Ace learned yesterday of Young Jessie’s passing. A superb singer and songwriter in the 1950’s R&B vein, he was also a highly accomplished pianist who made a living as a solo jazz pianist/vocalist, as well as with his own bands, the Obie Jessie Combo and the Obie Jessie Trio, playing club dates from the 1960s until recently.

Memphis guitar legend Steve Cropper posted these words on Facebook this week in tribute to his former boss at Stax Records, who passed away this week at the age of 92. Crop also went on to say that Jim “taught me so much about the record business, (and) the good news for me was that he trusted me with the company and the artists”.

Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and showman extraordinaire Roddy Jackson passed away on December 7^th. His friend Alec Palao remembers one of the very last active 50s rockers.

Soul and gospel singer Percy Wiggins has sent us the sad news that his brother Spencer passed away on 13^th February 2023.
