When, in 1960, Jimmy Gilmer replaced original Fireballs' member and lead singer Chuck Tharp, it started what was to be the band's most commercially successful period. At first, Gilmer confined himself to playing rhythm guitar with the band, but in 1962 The Fireballs began recording vocal tracks alongside their instrumentals. With Gilmer, they would eventually score 5 weeks at No I with the 1963 classic Sugar Shack, the biggest selling record of that year. The original Sugar Shack was recorded in mono and then re-recorded later in stereo for album release. Somewhere along the line, the original hit version was forgotten, so that most oldies stations today play the overdubbed version, not the original. This CD delivers the original mono hit back to catalogue!!The Fireballs followed their 1963 hit with Daisy Petal Pickin', which peaked at No 15 but future chart hits were put on ice by the British rock invasion. It was to be 3 years before the band hit the charts again, this time for Atco, with folk singer Tom Paxton's Bottle Of Wine. This great CD compilation brings together Jimmy Gilmer's early solo sides, his work with The Fireballs for Dot in 1963 and 64 and the band's later period material leased to Atco in 1967 and 68 (including the aforementioned great hits). A bumper package of 30 tracks (featuring 2 previously unreleased sides) and extensive sleevenotes with great photographs. One of the greatest of the American independent labels that sprang up as the folk and coffee-house circuit ascended from the bohemian to the cultural mainstream, Arhoolie Records was started by record collector Chris Strachwitz in 1960. Initially, working at home from his kitchen table, Chris recorded and produced albums by such great artists as Lightnin' Hopkins, Clifton Chenier, Flaco Jimenez and Fred McDowell. He was one of the first to bring cajun, zydeco and Tex-Mex musics to a wider, non-regional audience and he also made the first recordings with 60s rock star Country Joe MacDonald (for the Rag Baby label). Shake 'Em On Down and Tex Mex Fiesta are the first fruits of a new Ace series focusing on the great Arhoolie recordings. Compiled by John Broven and Chris Strachwitz, the series aims to bring the listener compilations by some of the best American roots artists.
