Ace Records are delighted to reissue the Tokens “Intercourse” LP.
Originally released in 1971 on their own B.T. Puppy label only, perhaps, a hundred copies were pressed and over the decades it has become a holy grail collectable with the handful of original copies that surface fetching a four figure sum.
Recorded mostly in 1968 as a concept album about life, the tracks were originally rejected by Warners which led to the band eventually putting it out themselves. Musically It sits in similar hallowed space to the Beach Boys’ “Smiley Smile” (1967), with dashes of the Millennium’s “Begin” (1968) and the 4 Seasons’ “The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette” (1969) in its adventurous vocal harmonies and arrangements.
Although the Tokens enjoyed massive hit singles in America – especially ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ – they always felt sore about “Intercourse” not receiving the critical acclaim and sales that they though it should have received.
Ace have licensed the album directly from B.T. Puppy and the music is the correct, band-approved running order.
Housed in a replica of the original “Intercourse” sleeve the album comes with an inner sleeve with liner notes by Bob Stanley.
This lion no longer sleeps – buy a copy and bathe in the sound of a lost classic
