Alive-Alive-O! brings together a steaming "live" session recorded at the Roundhouse, London, on February 19, 1978, with several interesting studio sides made originally as warm-ups or demos. Closing out the album is Ballad Of The Faithful Departed. An acoustic version of the Ghostown classic, it would later be recorded by Moving Hearts, Christy Moore solo and the Radiators' Phil Chevron accompanied by Elvis Costello. Though Chevron's later group The Pogues played it "live", they never recorded it.Many of the sides are covers of existing songs (The Flamin' Groovies' Teenage Head and Shake Some Action are just two), as befits a garage repertoire for a newly-emerging band. Others are "live" versions of originals that formed part of the band's first studio album TV Tube Heart.
Compiled jointly by Phil Chevron and Ace's Roger Armstrong, Alive-Alive-O! offers additional "live" and recorded insights into the group that the Melody Maker's Carol Clerk says produced in Ghostown "one of the most important and enduring LPs in my life... outrageously masterful stuff.
