In a brief but meteoric career Creedence Clearwater Revival produced a string of nine Top 10 hits with a back-to-basics, no nonsense music that flew in the face of the then current alternative culture. They came from San Francisco, but not as we know it Jim! In plaid shirts and jeans their stripped down amalgam of American roots music contrasted dramatically with the psychedelic , acid-drenched rock and extended guitar solos of many of their contemporaries. Despite that, they still played Woodstock and were embraced by the flower children as much as the Top 40 audience. A true American phenomenon, they are still influencing the new generation of guitar bands, and plaid shirts are still cool.
